At Immanuel Rehabilitation Center, in Omaha, Nebraska Therapeutic Recreation is an integral part of the rehabilitation process. We believe that recreation and leisure helps patients to move forward in their rehabilitation process and improves their quality of life.
Our Therapeutic Recreation staff promotes fitness and well-being by encouraging patients to be out of their rooms throughout the day and evening. Patients may work out in the gymnasium, use the accessible garden area, play video games and work on computers throughout their stay. We have a remarkable collection of adaptive equipment for our patients' use, including: handcycles, sports chairs for rugby, tennis or basketball; bowling equipment, single rider golf carts and adaptive playing aids/clubs and lots more.
Our staff gets to know the patient’s recreation interests, investigates potential resources, maximizes skill development and promotes community re-integration through one-on-one and group activities. Our goal is to give patients a chance to experience a wide variety of satisfying recreation experiences.
We focus not only on our patients but also their families who are an integral part of the rehabilitation process. The therapeutic recreation staff works very closely alongside the rehabilitation team, the patient and family in meeting patient’s goals.
Our patients discover that there are no limits to their recreational interests. They have participated in many activities, including: Hot Air Balloon rides, adaptive sports, waterskiing, gardening and attending a play. Some have even gone on to excel in their chosen sport, by winning national titles.
Many former patients have returned to Immanuel Rehabilitation Center as peer mentors and shared their experiences with current patients. Others have become active in community organizations to increase opportunities for those with a physical disability.
