  • If your baby is under three months old and has a rectal temperature greater than 100.4 F
  • If the baby has less than four wet diapers in a 24-hour period in the first week of life, and less than six wet diapers in a 24-hour period after the baby is seven days old
  • If the baby refuses to eat for six to eight hours
  • If the baby experiences drastic behavior changes such as increased irritability, excessive crying without a cause, extreme sleepiness or floppy arms and legs
  • If there is redness around the belly button that extends out into the stomach
  • If the baby repeatedly vomits or has green vomit
  • If the baby has a congested cough, running eyes or running nose or difficulty breast feeding
  • If the baby's skin color becomes pale or very yellow
  • If the baby develops a rash with a fever
  • If the baby  has frequent, watery stools with little or no solid components
  • If the baby has any accident or injury
