It is my honor to present the 2013 Community Benefit Report of Alegent Creighton Health as evidence of our ongoing service to the communities we serve in northeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa. During the past fiscal year, we were privileged to provide $73.2 million in direct Community Benefit, which is an 11.1 percent increase from last fiscal year.
A significant portion of that Community Benefit expenditure – $62.7 million – covered the cost of care for patients who are underinsured or uninsured. Additionally, we have invested in innovative programs and long-term community partnerships to build healthier communities while also preparing the next generation of healthcare leaders.
As marketplace exchanges and other Affordable Care Act provisions move forward, we will continue to be called upon to provide a vital safety net for patients who cannot afford healthcare. We are also implementing initiatives to ensure that we reduce the cost of care for this generation and for generations to come.
Our Mission, which guides us in all of these endeavors, furthermore leads us to serve community health priorities, including: our seventh year of investment in Live Well Omaha Kids to impact childhood obesity; innovative work to train college students to prevent violence before it starts; and ongoing support of the healthcare priorities of each distinctive community that we serve.
Please read further about our financial and in-kind commitments as well as about the dedicated individuals who bring our Mission to life through their work. We will continue to be present to the health needs of our community, faithful to the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.
