Irene Tamisiea Fox isn’t just still going at (almost) 100, she’s still volunteering.
Fox, who will turn 100 on Jan.15, knits caps for infants born at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs. She makes about four caps a month but used to produce many more.
“I made over 100 (per year) for a number of years,” she said.
She has been volunteering at Mercy since before the current facility was built in 1971, Fox said.
“I had a friend that was volunteering, and she got me to go,” she said.
In the early days, she took carts around to patients’ rooms and offered them a variety of items from the hospital gift shop. Selections included things like books, magazines, lotion and facial tissue.
