As shoppers milled about the Madison Avenue Hy-Vee Food Store’s meat counter Wednesday, employees were engaged in what appeared to be a life-and-death situation.
Mary Lou Pfeiffer, a nurse at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital, looked like an ordinary shopper. She was checking prices in one of the many coolers near the meat counter when her left arm appeared to go numb.
She was having trouble walking, then trouble speaking.
Employees behind the counter noticed her struggling right away. One ran to her side, another called 911.
