(OMAHA, Neb.) - Alegent Creighton Health is proud to announce that Immanuel Medical Center has achieved Pathway to Excellence® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The Pathway to Excellence designation identifies the elements of work environments where nurses can flourish. The designation substantiates the professional satisfaction of nurses at Immanuel Medical Center and identifies it as one of the best places to work.

"The Pathway to Excellence designation demonstrates that Immanuel Medical Center has created a work environment where nurses flourish and is evidence that, nursing as a profession is respected, professional development is supported, and optimal practice environments are nurtured," said Kathryn Koehler, MSN, MBA, RN, chief nurse executive at Immanuel Medical Center. "This designation confirms that our hospital is committed to the highest quality patient care, recognizing the contributions nurses make in collaborating with the healthcare team in achieving this goal."

The Pathway to Excellence designation is granted based on the confirmed presence of characteristics known as "The Pathway to Excellence Practice Standards." For an organization to earn the Pathway to Excellence distinction, it must successfully undergo a thorough review process that documents foundational quality initiatives in creating a positive work environment - as defined by nurses and supported by research. These initiatives must be present in the facility’s practices, policies, and culture. Nurses in the organization verify the presence of the criteria in the organization through participation in a completely confidential online survey.

"With our hospitals earning their Pathway to Excellence designation, along with our Magnet® hospitals, the nursing communities within Alegent Creighton Health are proud of what we have accomplished," said Jane Carmody, DNP, RN, CENP, vice president and chief nursing officer for Alegent Creighton Health. "We are on the Pathway journey at all our other sites as we continue to provide the highest level of care for our patients across the system."

Both Mercy Hospital and Lakeside Hospital have earned Magnet status from the ANCC. Mercy, first designated in 2005 and designated a second time in 2010, remains western Iowa’s only Magnet facility. Lakeside was recognized as a Magnet hospital in 2008.

As a Pathway to Excellence designated organization, Immanuel Medical Center is committed to nurses, to what nurses identify as important to their practice, and to valuing nurses’ contributions in the workplace. This designation confirms to the public that nurses working at Immanuel Medical Center know their efforts are supported. The honor encourages other nurses to join their colleagues in this desirable and nurturing environment.

"The Pathway to Excellence designation recognizes the long-standing excellence in compassionate care provided by our nurses at Immanuel Medical Center," said Ann Schumacher, president of Immanuel Medical Center. "I’m very proud of our entire team for their dedication to our patients. From that dedication, I have no doubt we will continue to find ways to continuously improve patient care."

The Pathway to Excellence designation is perfectly suited to small and medium-sized healthcare organizations, but is attainable by all healthcare facilities around the world.

Bergan Mercy Medical Center and Mercy-Corning Hospital achieve the Pathway to Excellence designation.

In November, Bergan Mercy Medical Center Mercy Hospital in Corning, IA also achieved the Pathway to Excellence designation. Bergan Mercy Medical Center became the first hospital in Nebraska to achieve the Pathway to Excellence designation.
