Resources

Preparing for a trip outside the country? Travel, whether for enjoyment or necessity can have associated risks. That's why Alegent Creighton Health Quick Care and Hy-Vee Pharmacy at 180th & Pacific have partnered to offer pre-travel counseling, immunizations and health advice for adults and children (Ages 6 and over) traveling outside of North America.

How to Prepare

You can never plan too far in advance, that’s why we recommend your initial appointment be as early as possible before departure. Some vaccines require 6 weeks and up to 6 months to assure coverage. The first step is to complete and print out our risk assessment. Each person in your travel party will require their own risk assessment so that we can evaluate your itinerary and past medical and vaccine history.

The 180th and Pacific Hy-Vee Pharmacy coordinates your visit. Once your questionnaire risk assessment is completed and you have researched your past vaccines, submit the form to the 180th and Pacific Hy-Vee Pharmacy. The assessment can be sent by mail: 1000 S. 178th Street, Omaha, NE 68118; by email: 1478pharmacymgr@hy-vee.com; or by Fax: 402-334-4954. The Alegent Creighton Health Quick Care Nurse Practitioners providing travel consultation will then review the information and make preparations for your visit. Please allow the pharmacy up to 48 hours to contact you to schedule a travel consult appointment.

Travel Assessment

Your travel clinic visit will include the following assessment:

Review of your itinerary

  • What countries will you visit, and in what order? Some countries require proof of vaccination when you enter from certain countries because of diseases that may be occurring in those areas.
  • How long will you stay in each country? With longer trips, you have more potential exposure to insects, food- and water-borne illness and other infectious diseases.
  • When does your trip begin? If you’re leaving in less than two weeks, you may not have time to get all the recommended doses of vaccine, or you may not have developed full protection yet

Risk factors for health problems on your trip

  • What type of accommodations will you stay in?
  • Where will you eat your meals and get water to drink?
  • What types of activities will you participate in on your trip? Do they involve high altitude, swimming in areas with water-borne bacteria or parasites, possible exposure to bites of domestic or wild animals, etc.?
  • Are insects a problem where you’re going? Diseases spread by mosquitoes occur all over the world, even in areas of the world we usually think of as safe.

Review of your medical history

  • Allergies
  • Medications
  • Chronic illnesses or medical conditions
  • Pregnancy

Medical and emergency care while traveling

  • Where would you get health care in an emergency during your trip?
  • What first aid supplies should you bring with you?
  • Do you have prescription medications or eyeglasses?

Vaccine requirements and recommendations

Which vaccines are required or recommended? What vaccines have you already had?

Prescription Recommendations

What prescriptions will you need to reduce the risks related to your travel? Not all diseases are prevented through vaccines. We will, however, prescribe recommended medications to prevent malaria, motion or altitude sickness based on your travel itinerary. Prescriptions to prevent traveler’s diarrhea will also be provided.

Pre-existing Conditions

If you have a pre-existing complex health condition, or a condition, which influences your immune system we highly encourage you to obtain your pre-travel care with your primary care physician.

Cost

The consultation with an Alegent Creighton Health Quick Care provider costs $79.00 plus the cost of any vaccines. The consult fee of $79.00 is due to Alegent Creighton Health Quick Care at time of service. This consult fee will not be submitted to insurance providers. Vaccine costs will be submitted to your insurance provider by Hy-Vee Pharmacy and the remaining amount is due at time of service
