Surgeons
Surgery often is used as a treatment for cancer. It may be done as a first-line treatment, or your doctor may recommend surgery after chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy has reduced the size of any operable tumors.
Surgery offers the greatest chance of cure for many types of cancer,
especially those that have not spread to other parts of the body. Most people with cancer will have some type of surgery. Cancer surgeries are performed by general surgeons or surgeons who specialize in cancer-related surgeries.
Alegent Creighton Health healthcare professionals work in various settings to meet the needs of people with cancer and their families.
Radiology
The Radiology Departments provide services used in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, including: diagnostic x-ray, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, CT scanning, MRI, mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and PET scanning. The Alegent Creighton Health Radiology Departments are certified by the American College of Radiology.
Pathology
The Pathology Departments, which provide inpatient and outpatient services, analyze specimens used in the diagnostic work-up of malignancies. The laboratories are fully accredited by the College of American Pathologists.
Pharmacists

Radiation Therapists, Dosimetrists, and Physicists
These professionals, who plan and administer prescribed radiation treatments, are skilled in all aspects of radiation oncology.
OCN/AOCN – Oncology Nursing Certification/Advanced Oncology Nursing Certification is the formal recognition of the specialized knowledge, skills, and experience demonstrated by the achievement of standards identified by a nursing specialty to promote health outcomes. The purpose of certification is to assure the public that nurses have completed all eligibility criteria to earn a specific credential. Another purpose of certification is to promote the development of specialty areas of nursing. Oncology Nursing Certification signifies a nurse has met or exceeded rigorous criteria for knowledge and experience, and posses a measured competency in a demanding practice area. Patients and families whose care is delivered by certified nurses are reassured the nurses have obtained the knowledge and skill to competently provide specialized care.
Nurses
Nurses give physical and emotional care to patients in many settings: inpatient, outpatient, office, home, and skilled care areas. A nurse's role can range from giving chemotherapy at the bedside to coordinating outpatient care between the clinic and home. Clinicians and clinical nurse specialists support and educate patients and families, and may act as administrators of the inpatient and outpatient cancer care facilities. In addition, the Cancer Support Team is composed of case management, ostomy, Home Health Care and Hospice nurses.
Nurse Navigators
After the initial diagnosis, the patient is assigned to an oncology nurse navigator, an oncology certified nurse who is the single point of contact for patients and families. The nurse navigator assists with scheduling initial tests and consultations. They also collaborate with members of the medical team to ensure information is current and understood by all of the physicians, nurses and other team members. They help the patient and family members understand his or her diagnosis and plan of care.
