Alegent Creighton Health Heart & Vascular Institute community education programs are designed to reduce heart and vascular disease risk by helping individuals make lifestyle changes and to improve the lives of those already been affected by heart disease and stroke. All programs are presented by healthcare professionals who are certified in their respective fields.
Appetite for Life
"Slow and steady wins the race!" That old adage is especially true of weight loss. Appetite for Life is a weight loss class, taught by a registered dietitian that addresses small changes you can make in your lifestyle that can reap big health rewards over time. Appetite for Life will cover a variety of topics, such as:
- Portion control
- Choosing the right foods
- The importance of exercise
- Healthy cooking
- Dining out tips
- Smart snacking
Mercy Hospital and the American Lung Association of Iowa invite individuals with chronic lung disease to attend the Better Breathers Club meeting at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital, Edwards Professional Center, 715 Harmony St. Better Breathers meets the fourth Monday of every month. Learn more about living with chronic lung disease. Appropriate health information literature is available and refreshments are provided. Commit to Quit Tobacco Cessation
Commit to Quit is an eight-week class that helps you quit tobacco, for good. During each class, members discuss issues important to them and learn from each other’s experiences. Classes focus on a variety of topics, including:
- preparing for change
- identifying triggers
- coping techniques
- stress management
Heart Care Support Group
You can live a full and happy life with your internal cardiac defibrillator (ICD), and our health experts will show you how. This support group provides education about ICDs and an opportunity for patients and caregivers to share their experiences with others who are dealing with similar feelings and concerns.

Heart Healthy Cooking Classes
Healthy foods can taste delicious! Learn from local professional chefs as they demonstrate new recipes and cooking techniques that add flavor and variety to your menus.Classes are held at Lakeside Hospital and Creighton University Medical Center.
Heart & Sole Walking Program
The Heart & Sole Walking Program is a safe, convenient and fun way to exercise. The program is held at Westroads Mall and administered by a exercise physiologist who gives you professional guidance on your walking program. The more you walk the more prizes you can win, too.
Living with ICD: The Internal Cardiac Defribrillator (ICD) Support Group
This group for is all Alegent Creighton Health patients who have an internal defibrillator. What are the requirements to attend? Family, caregivers and patients who have been affected by an internal defibrillator. Meetings are held quarterly. Each session offers education about an ICD and provides an avenue for patients and caregivers to share their experiences with others who are dealing with similar feelings and concerns. Cost: Free. Lifesaver parties are a fun, and free, way for you, your friends, family, co-workers, etc. to learn the skills you need to save a life. Our health experts come to your worksite, place of worship, daycare or meeting room, etc. - or you can hold your class in an Alegent Creighton hospital conference room. Our American Heart Association-certified instructors teach adult and child CPR, how to unblock an obstructed airway, and demonstrate how to operate an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Pre-Diabetes: Do you have it or are you at risk?
This class teaches you how to recognize the signs of diabetes, such as metabolic syndrome (Syndrome X), a pre-diabetic condition that is significantly associated with heart disease. The program will discuss healthy eating, weight loss and physical activity. Individual nutrition counseling is also recommended.
Stroke Support Group
Sponsored by Immanuel Rehabilitation Center, this monthly support group promotes health and healing following a stroke for both the caregiver and survivor. Each session features an educational program. The group's informal format promotes peer to peer support and networking opportunities for patients an caregivers.
Quitting smoking isn't easy. Many people try several times before quitting for good. Tobacco 101 is for people who are not quite ready to quit tobacco, but are getting more comfortable with the idea of change. Tobacco 101 is not designed to substitute for our successful Commit to Quit tobacco cessation program, but rather, it encourages you to think about the idea of quitting.
Tobacco Free U
Tobacco Free U Individual and Group Counseling gives you the tools and emotional support you'll need to prepare you for your Quit Day. Long-term follow-up calls from our Mayo Clinic-Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist (CTTS) prevent relapse and help you stay tobacco-free.
