Omaha's Creighton University Medical Center, a Level I comprehensive trauma center, holds the highest designation for trauma centers. This means CUMC has the facilities, resources, protocols and expertise to provide optimal emergency care for critically injured patients.
Gold Seal Accreditation
Creighton University Medical Center, in Omaha, Nebraska is one of only two hospitals in the U.S. and the only one in the region recognized by the Joint Commission for its management of orthopedic trauma. CUMC earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval by demonstrating compliance with the commission’s national standards for healthcare quality and safety in disease-specific care.
The Nearest Hospital Isn't Always Best
Trauma experts know the closest emergency department isn't always the best option when a person is severely injured. Paramedics at the scene determine whether the patient should go to a trauma center. This sometimes means driving by a hospital that is closer but doesn't have trauma surgeons immediately available and special medical equipment in the trauma bays.
During the past three years Alegent Creighton University Medical Center saw an average of 1388 trauma cases per year.The center utilizes Life Net helicopter service to airlift patients for critical trauma care. Our dedicated trauma bays ensure rapid and comprehensive patient evaluation and treatment. The trauma center itself is equipped with a CAT Scan suite, an on-site lab and X-ray for fast and complete reviews of injuries.
The Top 3 Types of Trauma Cases
The top three categories trauma cases treated by CUMC are: #1 falls (29%); #2 motor vehicle collisions (28%); and #3 gunshot wounds (7%). These top three categories make up 64% of annual trauma cases seen at CUMC. The oher trauma (36%) is comprised of 25 categories.
The Trauma Team
Specialized critical care teams, led by intensivists and surgeons, staff our 25-bed tertiary-care intensive care unit. CUMC's operating room teams stand ready to provide rapid damage-control surgery to improve survivability. Our critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, and other team members all are dedicated to ensuring superior care using evidence-based practices. Life after Trauma
After acute care has been provided, a Alegent Creighton Health provides a full range of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, including: brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation, and physical, occupational, speech therapy if needed, ensuring a continuum of patient care.
